Today's walkitcornwall quote

"I intend to live forever. So far, so good." — Steven Wright

We had a great time with you as our fearless guide. Loved it all especially the colours of Cornwall. We really enjoyed the pace of the walks. It allowed me to lag and take photos and be one with the land. Also it allowed me to fantasize about the smugglers and customs men dashing along the trails.

Crete guided trekking holiday

Crete - Greek guided walking holiday

October/ November 2020 dates to be confirmed. We are definitely going as the research has been done.

Two 9 day guided walking holidays back to back or one 16 day East and West Crete walking holiday together covering the West and then the East of Crete the southernmost island in Greece

I am getting together two new walks in Crete (or one long one if you choose) which will spread over 16 days. Why? It's because the island is full of great views, stories and areas to explore so I'm looking at two 9 day guided walking holidays, one in the East and one  in the West. Or join me to do both so you get further under the skin of the whole island. It takes 5-6 hours to travel from the West to the East coast so believe me there is so much in between to savour.

The landscape is dominated by mountains, gorges, beaches and meadows.  Add another layer of Minoan archaeology with a diversity of architecture that represents the multicultural historic influence of the East, West, North and South you realise that Crete has been a cultural gateway for thousands of years. Crete has been the heartbeat and soul of the the Mediterranean.

Gorges, mountains, beaches, caves, ancient olive groves, archaeological sites, villages nestled into mountain sides and food that have tastes that you will remember for ever - I just love Cretan cooking and as a veggie I am completely satisfied and catered for.

Watch out for more announcements on this. Meanwhile check out what could be part of either of these weeks.

Walking tour 1- The West

We will stay in the village of Paleochora in the south to walk part of the E4 European footpath and some local walks with enthusiastic local guides for 4 days before going to the multi cultural town of Chania which is a cultural gateway of the Southern, Western and Eastern cultures of Europe. From Bohemia to Boutique we will stay in some special places and you will be enmeshed from the minute you get there in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the West. Where the mountains meet the sea is a cacophony of the senses. Grand vistas, rocky landscapes, long beaches, ancient sites of some of the first European people and the food perfected through generations of knowledge of the local produce and animal husbandry.

Walking tour 2 - The East

We will stay in the villages of Mirtos on the south central coast and in Sitea on the north east coast. Variety is the name of the game and we have some outstanding walks that are coastal, in the mountains and a mixture of both, through gorges that lead from the mountains to the sea. While the landscape is slightly gentler than the west these walks will still be spectacular and as challenging as those in the west.

In October when we go the flora and fauna will be great. November is great as you can still swim. The colours, the aromas to match the clarity of the sea and the splendour of the sunsets, we have a variety of species of flowers from the mountains via the plains and meadows down to the sea. A geological and botanical heaven.

However inevitably, it is the vastness of the terrain, where humans are squeezed, often accommodated on long, winding and mesmerising narrow tracks between the mountains and the sea. There are also wide meadows that we explore and villages through which we pass. The paths that have a close proximity to that area between rock and sea require your attention and the rewards are numerous in the vistas and the experience of journeys that have taken place over thousands of years. You will be breathless for many a reason and I can guarantee a walking holiday unparalleled in the walkitcornwall "stable" of walks.
