Budock Vean hotel walking break 2012

phoca thumb l p1070828

Whilst we were entertained by the heavens opening on the first day the sun shone and mud dried out a smidgen. Visibility stretched to the undulating horizons and the lightly travelled, almost forgotten local footpaths transfixed us with their array of flowers, spring growth and tree cover. We traversed sunken lanes and footpaths that linked church to community and estate to workers cottages in former times. The winding roads followed the contours of the landscape in no hurry to get their travellers anywhere in particular at any great speed as if in deference to the views one would miss if travelling in haste.

On our annual walking break in the first week in May with the Budock Vean Hotel we had 8 on most of the 3 days of walks and 10 on a couple of half days. Our theme was "walking back to the Budock Vean" where we were dropped 7-9 miles away from the hotel and spent the day walking over fields, through woodlands and past the grand estates of the locality like Penwarne, Trenarth and Carwythenack that are now a shadow of their former grandeur and indeed acreage. From three different directions we walked stopping off for lunch at the Trengilly Wartha pub, the Cove at Maenporth and the South Cafe at Manaccan all highly recommended for their food and friendly management and staff. Welcome stops indeed they are and fully replete we set off every afternoon on the last few miles to the Budock Vean hotel.

Henry Thoreau, talking about walking in local and what would appear to be familiar territory said "Two or three hours' walking will carry me to as strange a country as I expect ever to see. A single farmhouse, which I had not seen before, is sometimes as good as the dominions of the King of Dahomey". I am always amazed, thankful and joyous that every time I walk a path for the hundredth time it always reveals more than I have seen before; something new, a different angle to familar vistas. To keep ones senses open everytime one walks, brings its own reward with a renewed appreciation of the locality and its landscape.

Maybe this is why people have returned on this walking break for the fifth or sixth time.
